What is the ETR?
The ETR is a survey that provides information on trips made by people residing in Spain both in and outside the country.
Its main aim is to ascertain the tourist behaviour of the resident population, analysing aspects such as the number of trips made, the destinations chosen, the length of the journeys, the types of accommodation used and the spending associated with the trips.

What information does the ETR provide?
The survey provides information on the characteristics of the trips made by residents of Spain, both within the country and abroad.
Among other aspects, it provides data on the number of trips, the overnight stays, the length of the stays, the reasons for the journeys, the destinations visited, the means of transport used, the types of accommodation and the spending incurred.
Annual information is also provided on the profiles of the travellers based on socio-economic variables and on non-travellers and their reasons for not travelling.

What is regarded as a tourist trip, according to the ETR?
A trip is regarded as any journey outside the municipality of residence that takes places for any reason and includes at least one overnight stay ending during the reference period.
Tourist trips are considered to be all journeys to a main destination outside the person’s regular place of residence which involve at least one overnight stay outside the above-mentioned environment and last less than one year, provided that the main reason for the trip (including business, leisure or other personal reasons) is different from a job at a company based in the place visited.

Who forms part of the target population of the study?
The ETR researches the population aged 15 and over residing in main family homes located in Spain.
The information which is compiled enables us to obtain representative estimates of the trips made by the resident population and their main characteristics.

What kinds of trips are included in the ETR?
The survey includes both trips made within Spain and those whose main destination is located abroad.
It also includes journeys for personal reasons, including leisure, holidays and visits to family and friends, as well as trips made for professional and work purposes.

What information on the trips is collected?
Information related to the main characteristics of each trip forming part of the research is collected.
Among other variables, data are obtained on the destination, the length of the stay, the reason, the type of accommodation used, the means of transport employed, the organisation of the journey and the expenses incurred.

How are the data of the ETR obtained?
The information is obtained by means of interviews conducted with a sample of people residing in Spain who are selected in accordance with statistical criteria.
The data that are collected then undergo validation, purification and statistical treatment processes to ensure the quality and consistency of the results.

How often are the results of the ETR published?
The ETR is an ongoing survey whose results are published on a quarterly basis.
This frequency enables us to regularly monitor the evolution of the trips made by the population residing in Spain.

How is the tourist spending of residents measured in the ETR?
The survey compiles information on the expenses associated with the trips made by residents.
This information is used to draw up estimates of the total spending incurred during the trips and several indicators related to the travellers' spending behaviour.

Does the ETR include trips abroad?
Yes. The ETR includes information on both trips made within Spain and those whose main destination is located outside the country.
It thus provides a comprehensive overview of residents’ tourist activity, regardless of the destination chosen.

How should the results of the ETR be interpreted?
The results reflect the characteristics and evolution of the trips made by the population residing in Spain.
For their proper interpretation, it is advisable to take into account factors such as seasonality, holiday schedules, economic circumstances and other elements that may affect the residents’ tourist behaviour.

How does the INE guarantee the quality and reliability of the information?
The INE applies control and validation procedures throughout all the phases of the statistical process, from the collection of the information to the publication of the results.
Similarly, the statistical operation is carried out in accordance with the principles set out in the European Statistics Code of Practice, which promotes the quality, transparency and reliability of official statistical information.
