What is the CTH?
The Hotel Tourism Short-Term Trends (CTH) survey is an operation that provides monthly information on the activity of hotel establishments in Spain.
It is made up of the Hotel Occupancy Survey (HOS), the Hotel Price Index (HPI) and the Hotel Sector Profitability Indicators (HSPI).
Together, these operations enable us to ascertain the evolution of hotel accommodation supply and demand in Spain, the occupancy of the establishments, the prices applied and the profitability of the sector.
-
What information does the CTH provide?
The CTH provides information on the demand for hotel accommodation by means of data such as the number of travellers, overnight stays and the average length of the stay, as well as the supply, with information on the number of establishments, places and employment.
It also provides indicators on the evolution of hotel prices and the revenue obtained by the establishments, enabling us to monitor the activity and economic situation of the sector.
-
What are the Hotel Occupancy Survey (HOS), the Hotel Price Index (HPI) and the Hotel Sector Profitability Indicators (HSPI)?
The Hotel Occupancy Survey (HOS) researches the main variables related to the activity of hotel establishments from the standpoints of supply and demand.
The Hotel Price Index (HPI) measures the monthly evolution of the prices applied by these establishments to their customers.
The Hotel Sector Profitability Indicators (HSPI) provide information on the average revenue obtained by the hotel establishments through their rooms and the average rates applied, facilitating analysis of the profitability of the activity.
-
Which establishments form part of the research?
The Hotel Occupancy Survey researches hotel establishments located within the country that provide collective accommodation services for a fee.
The research includes establishments of different categories and sizes spread across the country, in order to provide representative information on hotel activity in Spain.
-
Which variables does the Hotel Occupancy Survey analyse?
The survey analyses variables related to hotel accommodation supply and demand.
The main variables researched include the number of travellers, overnight stays, the average length of the stays, the number of establishments that are open, the places on offer, the personnel employed and the different occupancy rates.
-
How are the data collected?
The information is provided on a monthly basis by the hotel establishments by means of questionnaires addressed to the INE.
Once they have been collected, the data undergo different validation and purification processes and statistical treatments to ensure their quality and consistency before the publication of the results.
-
How often are the results published?
The results of the Hotel Tourism Short-Term Trends survey are published on a monthly basis.
This frequency enables us to constantly monitor the evolution of hotel activity and analyse the variations that occur throughout the year.
-
What are overnight stays and how are they calculated?
An overnight stay corresponds to each night that a traveller is lodged at a hotel establishment.
For example, if one person is lodged at a hotel for three nights, three overnight stays are counted. Similarly, if two people are lodged for one night, two overnight stays are recorded.
-
What is the hotel occupancy rate and how is it calculated?
The occupancy rate is an indicator that measures the degree of use of the accommodation capacity of hotel establishments.
It is calculated by relating the overnight stays that are registered with the places available during the reference period, enabling us to ascertain the degree of use of the existing hotel supply.
-
What does the Hotel Price Index (HPI) measure?
The HPI measures the evolution of the prices applied by hotel establishments to their customers.
Its purpose is to reflect the variations that hotel accommodation service prices undergo over time, regardless of any changes that may occur in the composition of the supply.
-
What do the Hotel Sector Profitability Indicators (HSPI) measure?
The HSPI provide information on the revenue obtained by hotel establishments through their rooms.
The most commonly used indicators include the average daily rate (ADR) per occupied room and the average daily revenue per available room (RevPAR), which are widely used to analyse the evolution of the profitability of the hotel sector.
-
How should the variations of these indicators be interpreted?
The variations observed in the different indicators reflect changes in the activity, prices or profitability of the hotel sector with respect to previous periods.
Their interpretation must take into account factors such as the seasonality of the tourist activity, the evolution of demand and other factors that may affect the behaviour of the sector.
-
How does the INE guarantee the quality and reliability of the data?
The INE applies control and validation procedures throughout all the phases of the statistical process, from the collection of the information to the publication of the results.
Similarly, the statistical operation is carried out in accordance with the principles set out in the European Statistics Code of Practice, which guarantees the quality, independence and reliability of official statistical information.
