Non-hotel Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey

Main results

  • Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation rose by 3.6% in April compared to the same month in 2025.
  • Overnight stays in apartments increased by 2.8%, those on campsites by 7.5% and those in rural tourism by 1.1%. Conversely, stays at hostels fell by 6.6%.
  • The Tourist Apartment Price Index (TAPI) increased by 3.4% in May compared to the same month of 2025 and the Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) rose by 4.6%. The Rural Tourism Price Index (IPTR) fell by 0.7%.

Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 12.1 million in May, with an increase of 3.6% compared to the same month last year.

Resident overnight stays increased by 3.7% and non-resident overnight stays by 3.5%. The average stay was 3.4 overnight stays per traveller.

Apartments

Overnight stays in tourist apartments increased by 2.8% in May. Overnight stays by residents increased by 11.5%, while those by non-residents fell by 0.2%.

The average stay decreased by 8.6% to 4.0 overnight stays per traveller.

In May, 36.1% of the places available were occupied, 3.5% more than in the same month of 2025. The occupancy rate by bed-places at the weekend was 41.8%, 5.2% more.

Non-resident travellers accounted for 72.2% of overnight stays. The United Kingdom was the main market of origin, with 36.1% of the total.

Canarias was the preferred destination for apartments, with more than 1.8 million overnight stays and a fall of 8.7% compared to May 2025. Comunidad de Madrid recorded the highest occupancy, with 83.1% of the apartments available.

By tourist areas, the Island of Tenerife was the preferred destination, with over 613,000 overnight stays. The Costa de Barcelona recorded the highest occupancy rate, with 90.7%. The tourist sites with the highest numbers of overnight stays were Mogán, Madrid and San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Campsites

Overnight stays at campsites increased by 7.5% in May compared with the same month of 2025. Those of residents decreased by 0.8%, while those of non-residents increased by 17.3%.

In May, 40.1% of the available sites were occupied, an increase of 5.4% in the annual rate. The weekend occupancy rate reached 44.1%, an increase of 4.4%. Non-resident travellers accounted for 50.3% of overnight stays. Germany was the main market of origin, with 25.0% of the total.

Catalonia was the preferred destination in campsites, with more than 1.9 million overnight stays, rising 10.2% in the annual rate. La Rioja achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 61.3% of the sites offered.

By tourist areas, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with more than 993,000 overnight stays. The Costa Blanca recorded the highest occupancy rate, with 68.8%. The tourist sites with the highest numbers of overnight stays were Benidorm, Mont-Roig del Camp and Castelló D’Empúries

Rural tourism accommodation

Overnight stays in rural tourist accommodation rose by 1.1% in May compared with the same month of 2025. Those by residents rose by 1.7%, while those by non-residents did not vary with respect to May 2025.

20.3% of the bed-places were occupied, 0.1% more than in May 2025. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 34.6%, with an annual increase of 3.5%.

Illes Balears was the preferred destination, with more than 198,000 overnight stays, 11.8% more than in May 2025. The region also achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 53.3%.

By tourist areas, the Island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with over 147,000 overnight stays. It also reached the highest occupancy rate, with 52.2% of the bed-places offered.

Hostels

Overnight stays at hostels fell by 6.6% in May. Spanish resident overnight stays fell by 0.5%, and those of non-residents by 11.3%.

32.3% of the bed-places were occupied, 5.6% less than in May 2025. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 36.8%, with a year-on-year decrease of 1.0%.

Galicia was the preferred destination, with more than 130,000 overnight stays. Comunidad de Madrid achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 52.9% of the bed-places offered.

The Tourist Apartment Price Index (TAPI) increased by 3.4% in May compared to the same month of 2025 and the Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) rose by 4.6%. The Rural Tourism Price Index (IPTR) fell by 0.7%.
