First quarter 2025

Main results

  • The number of trips made by residents in Spain decreased by 14.3% in the first quarter to 34.7 million.
  • Total expenditure decreased by 4.3% reaching 11,175 million euros.
  • Andalusia, Catalonia and Comunidad de Madrid were the main destinations.

Residents in Spain made 34.7 million trips in the first quarter, 14.3% less than in the same period of 2024.

Trips whose main destination was the national territory decreased by 16.1% and those abroad by 1.0%.

Trips by purpose and accommodation

Leisure, recreation and holiday trips decreased by 17.5% in the first quarter. On the other hand, Visits to relatives or friends decreased by 11.4%.

Trips for Business and other professional reasons decreased by 5.9% and trips for Other reasons by 21.4%.

By type of accommodation, domestic trips where residents stayed with relatives or friends decreased by 16.1%. In foreign trips, hotel accommodation decreased by 0.2%.

Main destinations and Autonomous Communities of origin

The main Autonomous Communities of destination for trips by residents in the first quarter were Andalucía (15.3% of the total), Cataluña (12.7%) and Comunidad de Madrid (9.5%).

Note: the data marked with "-" do not have sufficient sampling support.

In terms of origin, trips made by residents in the Comunidad de Madrid accounted for 18.1% of the total. This was followed by Cataluña (17.1%) and Andalucía (15.7%).

Eliminating the effect of the size of each Community, the most travellers were residents of Comunidad de Madrid (882 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Castilla y León (813) and Aragón (779).

Travel expenditure

The total travel expenditure in the first quarter reached 11.17 billion euros, indicating a 4.3% decrease as compared with the same period of 2024. For domestic trips, total expenditure decreased by 11.2%, while for trips abroad it increased by 7.1%.

The average daily expenditure was 88 euros - 72 euros for domestic trips and 127 euros for trips abroad.

By expenditure items, the highest expenditure on domestic trips was on bars and restaurants, with 26.7% of the total and an annual decrease of 10.8%. For trips abroad, the highest expenditure was on transport, with 35.8% of the total and an increase of 5.9%.

By main destination, the highest average daily expenditures were recorded for trips to the Comunidad de Madrid (100 euros), Canarias (99) and Illes Balears (84). And the lowest were in Castilla-La Mancha (50 euros), Extremadura and Castilla y León (both 56).

By origin, the highest average daily expenses were made by residents of Illes Balears (105 euros), Cantabria (104), Región de Murcia and Cataluña (both 96). The lowest were in Castilla – La Mancha (72 euros), Castilla y León (74) and La Rioja (80).

Monthly data

March saw the highest number of trips this quarter (12.3 million), while the longest average duration was recorded in January (4.3 overnight stays).

Excursions

The population aged 15 and over made 41.1 million trips in the first quarter, an annual decrease of 16.6%. Of these, 96.8% were for personal reasons.

Methodological note

The objective of the Residents Travel Survey (ETR/FAMILITUR) is to provide information on the trips and excursions carried out by the population resident in Spain, both within the country and abroad, and their main characteristics (duration, expenditure, reason, accommodation, etc.).

In addition, it provides annual information on the percentage of the population travelling for personal reasons and investigates the reasons given by those who do not travel.

quarterly continuous survey.
Population scope:
population aged 15 and over living in family homes in Spain.
Geographical scope:
the entire national territory.
Reference period of the results:
month, quarter, year (depending on the variable).
Sample size:
the effective monthly sample is around 8,200 persons, who provide information on the trips completed in the two months prior to the interview. The results of a reference month are obtained from around 16,400 questionnaires.
Sample type:
stratified three-stage random sample from the Georeferenced Address Framework. The first-stage units are census sections, the second-stage units are dwellings (a person aged 15 or over has been selected within each dwelling).
Collection method:
telephone and face-to-face interviews and online questionnaire.
