Second Quarter 2025

Main results

  • The number of trips by residents in Spain increased by 2.9% in the second quarter to 46.4 million.
  • Total expenditure increased by 9.7% and exceeded 15,202 million euros.
  • Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community were the main destinations.

Residents in Spain made 46.4 million trips in the second quarter, 2.9% more than in the same period of 2024.

Trips whose main destination was the national territory increased by 1.9% and those abroad by 11.8%.

Trips by purpose and accommodation

Leisure, recreation and holidays increased by 4.9% in the second quarter and Visits to relatives or friends rose by 6.7%.

Trips for Business and other professional reasons decreased by 9.0%, while trips for Other reasons fell by 11.4%.

By type of accommodation, domestic trips where residents stayed with relatives or friends increased by 9.9%. In foreign trips, hotel accommodation grew by 2.1%.

Main destinations and Autonomous Communities of origin

The main autonomous communities of destination for trips by residents in the second quarter were Andalusia (16.9% of the total), Cataluña (14.7%) and Comunitat Valenciana (10.3%).

In terms of origin, trips made by residents in Catalonia accounted for 19.0% of the total. Comunidad de Madrid (17.9%) and Andalucía (14.5%) came next.

Eliminating the effect of the size of each Community, the most frequent travellers were residents of Comunidad de Madrid (1,132 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Basque Country (1,098) and La Rioja (1,085).

Travel expenditure

Total travel expenditure in the second quarter was 15,202.3 million euros, an increase of 9.7% compared to the same period in 2024. Total expenditure on domestic trips increased by 7.5% and on trips abroad by 14.3%.

The average daily expenditure was 92 euros, with 76 euros spent on domestic trips and 153 euros for trips abroad.

By expenditure items, the highest expenditure on domestic trips was on accommodation, with 27.0% of the total and an annual increase of 7.9%. For trips abroad, the highest expenditure was on transport, with 30.7% of the total and an increase of 11.5%.

By main destination, the highest average daily expenditures were recorded for trips to the Comunidad de Madrid (111 euros), Canarias (110) and Illes Balears (106). The lowest figures were in Castilla-La Mancha (59), Extremadura (61) and Castilla y León (62).

By origin, the highest daily expenditures were made by residents in Canarias (108 euros), Illes Balears (107) and Cantabria (103). The lowest were made in Aragón (83), Castilla-La Mancha (85) and Comunitat Valenciana (88).

Monthly data

April recorded the highest number of trips this quarter (16.3 million) and the longest average duration (3.9 overnight stays).

Excursions

The population aged 15 and over made 44.7 million trips in the second quarter, an annual decrease of 15.0%. Of these, 96.1% were for personal reasons.

Methodological note

The objective of the Residents Travel Survey (ETR/FAMILITUR) is to provide information on the trips and excursions carried out by the population resident in Spain, both within the country and abroad, and their main characteristics (duration, expenditure, reason, accommodation, etc.).

In addition, it provides annual information on the percentage of the population travelling for personal reasons and investigates the reasons given by those who do not travel.

quarterly continuous survey.
Population scope:
population aged 15 and over living in family homes in Spain.
Geographical scope:
the entire national territory.
Reference period of the results:
month, quarter, year (depending on the variable).
Sample size:
the effective monthly sample is around 8,200 persons, who provide information on the trips completed in the two months prior to the interview. The results of a reference month are obtained from around 16,400 questionnaires.
Sample type:
stratified three-stage random sample from the Georeferenced Address Framework. The first-stage units are census sections, the second-stage units are dwellings (a person aged 15 or over has been selected within each dwelling).
Collection method:
telephone and face-to-face interviews and online questionnaire.
