Housing stock

The number of dwellings has increased in the last 10 years in every Autonomous Community; the greatest increases are found in: Región de Murcia (31.1%) and La Rioja (27.4%). By province, the greatest increases correspond to Almería (45.4) and Guadalajara (37.4); the lowest percentage in: Cáceres (7.5%).

Secondary dwellings

The distribution of secondary dwellings is uneven. Comunitat Valenciana, Andalucía and Cataluña register almost half of all the secondary dwellings. Generally, provinces with a lower population have a greater percentage of secondary dwellings (Ávila surpasses 40% out of the total).

Empty dwellings

In the last ten years the number of empty dwellings has increased by 336,943, although in Autonomouus Communities like Madrid, Baleares, País Vasco or Cataluña it has decreased. Galicia, La Rioja and Murcia are the Autonomous Communities with the greatest percentage of empty dwellings. The provinces with the greatest percentages are Ourense, Lugo and Castellón.

Characteristics of the buildings

Between the years 2002 and 2011 1,538,425 new buildings were built. 2005 and 2006 were the years with a greatest activity, registering 14.6% and 13.0% of the total decade, respectively. Last years of the decade were the ones with the lowest activity, with less than 6% both in 2010 and 2011.
