The total expenditure of international tourists visiting Spain in May reached 12,254 million euros, an increase of 4.9% compared to the same month in 2024.
The average expenditure per tourist stood at 1,304 euros, with an annual increase of 3.3%. On the other hand, the average daily expenditure increased by 1.9%, up to 209 euros.

During the first five months of 2025, the total expenditure of international tourists increased by 8.1% and reached 46.586 billion euros.
The main sending countries in terms of the level of expenditure in May were the United Kingdom (with 19.2% of the total), Germany (10.9%) and France (8.1%).
Expenditure by tourists resident in the United Kingdom increased by 7.2% in the annual rate, the figure for German tourists dropped by 5.7% and rose by 0.2% for French tourists.
During the first five months of 2025, the UK was the country with the highest cumulative expenditure (16.9% of the total). It was followed by Germany (12.5%) and France (8.1%).
The expenditure on international transport (not included in package tours) was the main item in May, with 21.1% of total expenditure and an increase of 3.5% compared to the same month in 2024.
The following items were expenditure on activities and accommodation, with 20.2% and 18.2% of the total, respectively. The former increased by 4.9% and the latter by 7.9%.
68.2% of the total expenditure in May was made by tourists who stayed overnight in hotels, with an annual increase of 1.6%. On the other hand, expenditure on non-market accommodation increased by 10.0%.
Expenditure by tourists not travelling with a package tour increased by 4.2% in annual terms. For those who contracted a package tour, it increased by 7.0%.
In terms of the reason for travel, tourists visiting Spain for leisure generated 84.0% of the total expenditure, with a 4.6% higher spend than in May 2024.
(*) Two main groups of accommodation are distinguished according to whether or not there has been a monetary transaction: market (paid accommodation: hotels, rental accommodation, camping, rural house and other market accommodation) or non-market (owned housing, family and friends housing and other non-market accommodation).
The Autonomous Communities of main destination with the greatest weight in tourist spending in May were Illes Balears (with 19.1% of the total), Cataluña (18.7%) and Andalucía (15.5%). Tourist expenditure increased by 5.3% in annual rate in Illes Balears, decreased 1.3% in Cataluña and rose 11.1% in Andalucía.
During the first five months of 2025, the communities with the highest cumulative expenditure were Canarias (with 22.1% of the total), Cataluña (17.1%) and Andalucía (15.5%).
