Survey on Equipment and Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Households

Year 2025

Main results

  • 96.3% of the population aged 16 to 74 used the Internet in the last three months (0.5 points more than in 2024).
  • 59.6% made purchases online in the last three months (2.9 points more than in 2024).
  • 37.9% of the population aged 16 to 74 have used Generative Artificial Intelligence tools the Internet in the last three months.
  • 66.5% have basic or advanced digital skills (0.3 points more than in 2023).

ICT Equipment in households

99.7% of households with at least one member aged 16-74 had some type of telephone (landline and/or mobile) and 49.0% had both. 0.3% only had a landline and 50.3% exclusively had a mobile phone.

83.8% of households had some type of computer (desktop, laptop, tablet, etc.), 0.8 points more than in 2024.

97.4% of households had Internet access via fixed and/or mobile broadband (compared to 96.8% in 2024). Of the total, 86.8% had a fixed broadband connection (fibre optics, cable, ADSL, etc.), while 10.7% only gained access through a mobile connection (3G, 4G or 5G).

Use of ICT by people aged 16 to 74

96.3% of people aged 16 to 74 used the Internet in the last three months (0.5 points more than in 2024) and 92.5% did so on a daily basis (1.0 points more).

59.6% made purchases online for personal reasons in the last three months, 2.9 points more than in 2024.

The autonomous communities with the highest percentages of Internet users and people making purchases in the last three months are the Community of Madrid (98.0% and 65.0% respectively), Catalonia (97.8% and 64.8%) and Balearic Islands (97.3% and 63.6%).

By sex, women displayed slightly higher percentages than men: 0.4 points more in Internet use in the last three months, 1.5 points more in daily use and 1.1 points more in online purchases.

96.0% of people aged 16 to 74 did some activity related to communication, 87.9% to information and 74.7% to internet banking.

As for purchases made in the last three months, 56.7% of the population aged 16 to 74 purchased a product in physical format, 1.2 points more than in 2024.

49.8% of the population aged 16 to 74 downloaded a product or subscription in the last three months, 4.7 points more than in 2024.

26.6% subscribed to an Accommodation service in the last three months (2.7 points more than in 2024), while 26.5% did so to Transport services (3.8 points more).

Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

37.9% of people aged 16 to 74 have used a Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool.

39.9% of men use AI tools compared to 35.9% of women.

By age group, the younger the age, the higher the proportion of AI use.

Digital skills

66.5% of people aged 16 to 74 have basic or advanced skills, 0.3 points more than in 2023 (the most recent year with information on these skills).

The gender gap between men and women amounts to 3.2 points, compared to 0.6 points in 2023.

With a higher level of disaggregation, we can observe that 27.3% have basic skills (the same percentage as in 2023), while 39.2% have advanced or superior skills (compared to 38.9% in 2023).

E-Government

Over eight out of ten people aged 16 to 74 (80.7%, a point higher than 2024) contacted or interacted with the authorities or public services over the Internet in the last 12 months for personal reasons.

The most common contacts were for Accessing stored information (62.6%) and Making an appointment or booking (61.9%).

Teleworking

14.8% of employed people aged 16 to 74 declared that they worked remotely during the week before the survey. This percentage was 0.3 points lower than in 2024. The telework rate among employed persons with the possibility to work remotely was 47.7%.

The Community of Madrid (where 26.2% of the total employed people worked remotely), Catalonia (21.5%) and Andalusia (13.7%) were the autonomous communities with the highest percentages.

On average, they worked remotely 2.9 days a week, 0.1 days less than in 2024.

Employed people valued their experience with this form of work very positively, with an average of 8.9 points out of 10.

Use of ICT by minors (aged 10 to 15)

96.9% of minors used a computer, 1.1 points more than in 2024. And 96.5% browsed the Internet, 0.5 points more. Meanwhile, 67.9% used a mobile phone, 1.7 points lower than in 2024.

The largest decreases in mobile phone use are observed in the 10 and 11 year-old age groups, falling 3.7 and 4.0 points, respectively, compared to 2024.

Methodological note

The Survey on Equipment and Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Homes has been carried out by the INE following the methodological recommendations of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat).

Its aim is to obtain data on the development and evolution of the Information Society, which includes I household ICT equipment, degree of Internet use, activities carried out, e-commerce, e-government, etc. .

For the purposes of achieving greater comparability with Eurostat¿s data, the results refer to homes inhabited by at least one person aged 16 to 74 and people in the same age group. However, additional information is also included on minors (aged 10 to 15) and people aged 75 and over.

the calendar year.
Information reference period:
the different periods (12 months, three months, last week, etc.) refer to the time interval prior to the moment of the interview.
Information collection period:
from 31 March to 13 July 2025.
Sampling type:
Stratified three-stage. The first-stage units are the census sections. The second-stage units are the main family homes. In the third stage, one person aged 16 or over from each household is selected. Similarly, information is obtained from all the children aged 10 to 15 in the home. The theoretical sample size is 26,862 homes, of which a quarter are renewed each year.
Collection method:
phone interviews and filling in information online.
