Main results

  • The number of passengers using public transport increased by 3.7% in June, as compared with the same month of 2023.
  • The annual rate for city transport increased by 4.5% and for inter-city transport by 3.5%.

More than 465.5 million passengers used public transport in June, 3.7% more than in the same month of 2023.  

The annual rate for city transport increased by 4.5% and for inter-city transport 3.5%. Within the latter, it is worth noting the 7.4% rise in the air transport.

City transport

City transport was used by more than 285.4 million passengers in June, 4.5% more than in the same month of 2023.

Metro transport increased by 4.7% in annual rate and City transport by bus increased by 4.3% in June.

Inter-city transport

More than 133.4 million passengers used inter-city transport in June, representing a 3.5% increase as compared with the same month of 2023.

By mode of transport, the air transport increased by 7.4%, the maritime transport by 5.2%, the bus transport by 5.1%, and the rail transport by 1.3%.

Special and unscheduled transport

More than 46.6 million passengers used special and unscheduled transport in June, indicating a decrease of 0.5% in annual rate.

The number of special transport passengers reached more than 27.0 million users, the same level as in the same month in the previous year. Within this, school transport increased by 3.5%, whereas work transport decreased by 9.6%.

Finally, unscheduled transport decreased by 1.3% as compared with the same month of 2023, with more than 19.6 million passengers.

Results by Autonomous Communities

The number of bus transport passengers showed the highest increases in Región de Murcia (16.0%), Extremadura (15.9%) and Andalucía (12.4%).

In turn, the only decrease in bus transport passengers was showed in País Vasco (-9.5%).

Metro transport increased in all cities with this type of transport as compared with the same month of the previous year. Palma's metro registered the highest increase (37.7%), and Madrid's registered the lowest (4.2%).

Methodological note

The purpose of the Passenger Transport Statistics (PT) is to provide monthly information regarding the number of passengers transported by city transport (bus and metropolitan), inter-city transport (road, rail, air and sea) and special and unscheduled bus transport.

Road transport in researched through a simple survey. For rail transport, the number of passengers is calculated using the information provided by the railway operators (RENFE and other autonomous companies). The information for air transport is provided by Civil Aviation, and for sea transport, the number of passengers disembarked is compiled using information from State Ports.
