The population resident in group establishments increases
The population resident in group establishments increases 90.3% in one decade, reaching 444,000 persons. The Autonomous Communities that registered the highest percentage of population resident in group establishments were: Castilla y León, Aragón and Castilla-La Mancha. At the other end of the spectrum were: Illes Balears, Canarias and Región de Murcia.

More than 270,000 persons live in residences for elderly persons
68.6% of them were women, with a proportion of 2.18 women per man; the proportion grew to more than seven women per man at ages over 100 years old. By province, those that registered the highest percentage of the population in residences for elderly persons were: Soria, Palencia, Zamora, Ávila and Teruel; and those that registered the lowest percentage were: Las Palmas, Murcia, Málaga, Sevilla and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

64,109 persons reside in prison institutions
The second type of group establishment, by number of persons, was that of prison institutions. The population resident in prisons was predominantly male (there were only 5,060 women, or 7.9% of the total), concentrated within the bracket aged 20 to 34 years old.

Religious institutions and other establishments
The population resident in religious institutions has decreased to less than half since 2001, standing at 18,487 persons, as compared with 41,137 of the preceding census. 82.4% were women in the oldest age. In health institutions (including psychiatric care), the male population was greater (56%), as in military institutions (84.1%).
