1.3.8. Average annual income by consumption unit
Description of indicator
Income by consumption unit (or equivalent income) is used in all EU countries with the so-called OECD modified scale, which gives a weight of 1.0 to the first person aged 14 or more, a weight of 0.5 to other persons aged 14 or more and a weight of 0.3 to persons aged 0-13.
This way, a household with two adults would count as 1.5 consumption units (1+0.5=1.5) and a household with two adults and two children would be given by 2.1 consumption units (1+0.5+0.3+0.+=2.1). Income per household consumption unit is calculated by dividing the total household income between the number of consumption units in that household. Hence, in the aforementioned household, the income will be divided by 2.1 consumptions unit. Once the income by consumption unit has been calculated, it is assigned to each member.
At national level, the source is the Living Conditions Survey.
