Goal

Goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Target

Target 15.1. By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements

Indicator

Indicator 15.1.2. Proportion of important sites for terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity that are covered by protected areas, by ecosystem type

Sub-indicator

Definition

This indicator shows the trend in the percentage of wetland area included in the protected areas collected in the Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity.

Calculation method

The occupation of the soil is determined from the UNFCCC classification incorporated into the Forest Map of Spain, and the types of ¿water¿ and ¿wetlands. Desarbolado¿ are included within the wetlands. This information is combined with the digital mapping of the protected spaces included in the Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity (Protected Natural Spaces, Natura Network 2000 or Areas protected by international instruments).

Observations

Data related to December This sheet reflects the current methodology of calculating the indicator. This indicator is under review and its methodology will be modified in the next update of the data.Disaggregation by autonomous community may not be compatible with disaggregation by type of ecosystem, so it might be convenient to do so only for the total of ecosystems, in a new subindicator.
