This indicator shows the trend in the percentage of grassland area included in protected mountain areas.
Mountain areas are determined on the basis of the digital land model 1:25,000 IGN according to the UNEP-WCMC criteria described in Kapos et al. 2000. The land occupation is determined on the basis of the UNFCCC classification incorporated into the Forest Map of Spain, and is included in the rangelands the classes of dispersed and distended treeland. All this information is combined with the digital mapping of the protected spaces included in the Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity (Protected Natural Spaces, Natura Network 2000 or Areas protected by international instruments).

Data related to December This sheet reflects the current methodology of calculating the indicator. This indicator is under review and its methodology will be modified in the next update of the data.Disaggregation by autonomous community may not be compatible with disaggregation by type of ecosystem, so it might be convenient to do so only for the total of ecosystems, in a new subindicator.
