Metadata Sub-indicator 2.5.1.2. Proportion of local livestock breeds with reproductive material resources secured in either medium or long-term conservation facilities
Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Target 2.5. By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seed and plant banks at the national, regional and international levels, and ensure access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as internationally agreed.
Indicator 2.5.1. Number of plant and animal genetic resources for food and agriculture secured in either medium- or long-term conservation facilities
Sub-indicator 2.5.1.2. Proportion of local livestock breeds with reproductive material resources secured in either medium or long-term conservation facilities
Proportion of landraces that could be reconstituted from genetic material stored in germplasm banks.
Based on the number of local breeds existing in our country (according to the FAO definition, a local breed is one that only one country has reported its existence), the percentage of these breeds that have genetic material stored in germplasm banks in an amount that allows their reconstitution in case of extinction is determined. This amount of material is calculated on the FAO DAD-IS website (https://www.fao.org/dad-is/es/) based on the contents of the Guide on Cryopreservation of Animal Genetic Resources (FAO, 2012), accessible at http://www.fao.org/docrep/016/i3017e/i3017e00.htm. Data are supplied to DAD-IS from the National Breed Information System, ARCA. In turn, ARCA collects, on an annual basis, information on genetic material stored from all operators registered in the General Register of Establishments and Distributors of Reproductive Products.
