Target

Target 12.a. Support developing countries to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production

Indicator

Indicator 12.a.1. Installed renewable energy-generating capacity in developing and developed countries (in watts per capita)

Sub-indicator

Sub-indicator 12.a.1.1. Installed renewable energy-generating capacity in developing and developed countries (in watts per capita)

Type of indicator (global, European, national)
Global
Definition

The indicator is defined as the installed capacity of power plants generating electricity from renewable energy sources divided by the total population of a country. Capacity is defined as the maximum net installed electricity capacity at the end of the year and renewable energy sources are those defined in the IRENA Statute.

Calculation method

\[ \frac{ C_{max}^t}{P^t} \] where \( C_{max}^t \) is the maximum capacity (in Watts) in year \(t\) that IRENA has in its database, and  \(P^t\) is the population that the United Nations has in the database of its “World Population Prospects” section in the same year.

Observations

IRENA: IRENA's electricity capacity database contains information on installed electricity generation capacity at the end of the year, measured in megawatts (MW).

UNITED NATIONS: For the population portion of this indicator, IRENA uses population data from the United Nations World Population Prospects. Population data reflect residents in a country or area regardless of their legal status or citizenship. Values are mid-year estimates. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs published information on its methodology at the following link https://population.un.org/wpp/Methodology/.
