Metadata Sub-indicator 2.5.1.3. Proportion of transboundary livestock breeds with reproductive material resources secured in either medium or long-term conservation facilities

Goal

Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Target

Target 2.5. By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seed and plant banks at the national, regional and international levels, and promote access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as internationally agreed

Indicator

Indicator 2.5.1. Number of (a) plant and (b) animal genetic resources for food and agriculture secured in either medium- or long-term conservation facilities

Sub-indicator

Sub-indicator 2.5.1.3. Proportion of transboundary livestock breeds with reproductive material resources secured in either medium or long-term conservation facilities

Type of indicator (global, European, national)
Global
Definition

Proportion of transboundary livestock breeds with reproductive material resources secured in either medium or long-term conservation facilities

Calculation method

Based on the number of transboundary breeds existing in our country (according to the FAO’s definition, a transboundary breed is one that is reported by more than one country), the percentage of these breeds for which genetic material is stored in germplasm banks in sufficient quantities to allow for their reconstitution in the event of extinction is determined. This quantity of material is calculated on the FAO’s DAD-IS website (https://www.fao.org/dad-is/es/) based on the content of the Guide to Cryopreservation of Animal Genetic Resources (FAO, 2012), available at http://www.fao.org/docrep/016/i3017e/ i3017e00.htm. The data is supplied to DAD-IS by the National Breed Information System, ARCA. In turn, ARCA collects, on an annual basis, information on stored genetic material from all operators registered in the General Register of establishments and distributors of reproductive products.
