Definition

Proportion of population with positive out-of-pocket household expenditures on health exceeding 40 per cent of household discretionary budget

Calculation method

\[\%POB_{40} = \frac{\sum m_i \cdot w_i \cdot 1 [\text{Hogar}_{gsan} > 0,4 \cdot Gdis \cap \text{Hogar}_{gsan} > 0]}{\sum m_i \cdot w_i} \] Where: \(\sum m_i \cdot w_i \cdot 1 [\text{Hogar}_{gsan} > 0,4 \cdot Gdis \cap \text{Hogar}_{gsan} > 0]\) refers to the population weighted average number of people with positive out-of-pocket household expenditure on health exceeding 40 % of household discretionary budget,and \(\sum m_i \cdot w_i\) is the total population.

Specifically:

  • mi refers to the number of household members,
  • wis the sampling weight of household i,
  • 1[… ] is the indicator function, taking the value of 1 when the expression inside brackets is true, and the value of 0 otherwise,
  • Hogargsan is the household expenditures on health,
  • Gdis refers to the household discretionary budget defined as Gdis= G - SPL, where G corresponding to daily per capita total household expenditures, and SPL is the societal poverty line defined as \( SPL=$1.15+0.5 \cdot median(G-Hogar_{san}) \), where $1,15 is converted to spanish currency using 2017 Purchasing Power Parities and considering CPI.
