Main results

  • Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation increased by 7.9% in November, as compared with the same month in 2022.
  • Cumulative overnight stays since January grew by 4.1%.

Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodations (holiday dwellings, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 6.4 million in November, an increase of 7.9% compared with the same month last year. Resident overnight stays increased by 3.7% and non-resident overnight stays by 9.8%.

The average stay was 4.5 overnight stays per traveller.

During the first 11 months of 2023, overnight stays increased by 4.1%, as compared with the same period in 2022.

Overnight stays in holiday dwellings increased by 6.4% in January. Resident overnight stays increased by 0.8% and non-resident overnight stays by 7.9%.

The average stay decreased by 1.5%, to 5.6 overnight stays per traveller.

In November, 32.0% of the available bed places were occupied, an annual increase of 0.3%. The weekend occupancy rate by bed-places stood at 35.6%, a decrease of 0.5%.

Non-residents accounted for 79.4% of overnight stays. The United Kingdom was the main market of origin, with 29.2% of the total.

Canarias was the preferred holiday dwelling destination, with more than 2.2 million overnight stays, and an increase of 2.1% as compared with November 2022. Canarias also had the highest occupancy rate, at 84.2% of the holiday dwellings offered.

By tourist areas, the island of Tenerife was the preferred destination, with 744,172 overnight stays. Isla de Lanzarote had the highest occupancy rate, with 87.1%. The tourist sites with the greatest number of overnight stays were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arona and Tías.

Campsites

Overnight stays in campsites increased by 13.2% in November compared to the same month in 2022. Resident overnight stays grew by 13.3%, and those of non-residents by 13.2%.

In November, 41.5% of the available bed places were occupied, an annual increase of 9.2%. The weekend occupancy rate reached 42.7%, an increase of 6.9%. Non-residents accounted for 66.0% of overnight stays. Germany was the main market of origin, with 35.3% of the total.

Comunitat Valenciana was the preferred destination for campsites, with more than 649 million overnight stays, an increase of 12.9% in the annual rate. It also achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 63.5% of campsites offered.

By tourist area, the Costa Blanca (Alicante) was the preferred destination, with 343,164 overnight stays. This region also had the highest occupancy rate, with 80.0%. The tourist sites with the most overnight stays were Benidorm, Cartagena and Mazarrón.

Rural tourism accommodation

Overnight stays at rural tourism accommodations increased by 4.9% in November. Resident overnight stays grew by 2.1%, and those of non-residents by 17.9%.

12.5% of the bedplaces were occupied, 1.3% more than in November 2022. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 29.4%, the same figure as last year.

Castilla y León was the preferred destination, with 111,074 overnight stays, 4.6% more than in November 2022. Canarias achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 37.6%.

By tourist area, the Pirineo Navarro was the preferred destination, with 27,143 overnight stays, while Corona Forestal Natural Park achieved the highest occupancy, with 39.7% of the bedplaces offered.

Hostels

Overnight stays in hostels recorded an annual increase of 10.2% in November. Overnight stays by residents decreased by 3.1% while those by non-residents increased by 20.8%.

20.6% of the bedplaces were occupied, 9.9% more than in November 2022. The weekend occupancy rate reached 29.8%, an increase of 15.7%.

Comunidad de Madrid was the main destination, with 93,812 overnight stays. Canarias achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 62.2% of the bed-places offered.

Price indices

The Holiday Dwelling Price Index (HDPI) increased by 9.6% in November compared with the same month in 2022. The Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) increased by 2.8% and the Rural Tourism Index (RTAPI) increased by 4.3%.
