A new experimental statistic in the area of tourism, the ETR’s Advance Estimator, will be published on 7 September 2026.
This operation will provide a monthly advance estimate of the tourist trips made by residents in Spain, integrating partial information from the ETR and mobile phone positioning data. Applying a methodology based on predictive models and second-level models or stacking, this estimate will become available just 35 days after the reference month. The first publication will correspond to the data for July 2026.
This will substantially improve the availability of the information, significantly reducing the time lag required for the publication of the ETR, which can last up to five months for the first month of each quarter.
The quarterly ETR publications will update the advanced monthly results, which will then become definitive.
Further information on the ETR’s Advance Estimator can be found in the technical project. And its publication dates on the calendar on the INE’s website.
The objective of the Residents Travel Survey (ETR/FAMILITUR) is to provide information on the trips and excursions carried out by the population resident in Spain, both within the country and abroad, and their main characteristics (duration, expenditure, reason, accommodation, etc.).
In addition, it provides annual information on the percentage of the population travelling for personal reasons and investigates the reasons given by those who do not travel.
For more information, you can access the methodology and the standardised methodological report.
