Main Results

  • The number of trips made by residents in Spain decreased by 0.2% in the third quarter to 60.4 million.
  • Total expenditure increased by 4.2% and exceeded 24,544 million euros.
  • Andalucía, Cataluña and Comunitat Valenciana were the main destinations.

Residents in Spain made 60.4 million trips in the third quarter, 0.2% less than in the same period of 2023.

Trips whose main destination was the national territory decreased by 2.2%, and those abroad increased by 15.5%.

Trips by purpose and accommodation

Leisure, recreation and holidays decreased by 2.0% in the third quarter and Visits to relatives or friends increased by 3.8%.

Trips for Business and other professional reasons decreased by 3.2%, while trips for Other reasons increased by 4.7%.

By type of accommodation, domestic trips where residents stayed with relatives or friends decreased by 10.8%. In foreign trips, hotel accommodation increased by 4.3%.

Main destinations and Autonomous Communities of origin

The main autonomous communities of destination for trips by residents in the third quarter were Andalucía (18.7% of the total), Cataluña (11.9%), and Comunitat Valenciana (11.1%).

Note: the data marked with "-" do not have sufficient sampling support.

In terms of origin, trips made by residents in the Comunidad de Madrid accounted for 19.6% of the total. This was followed by Cataluña (16.4%) and Andalucía (15.8%).

Eliminating the effect of the size of each Community, the most frequent travellers were residents of Comunidad de Madrid (1,647 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Basque Country (1,582) and La Rioja (1,379).

Travel expenditure

Total travel expenditure in the third quarter was 24,544.4 million euros, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period in 2023. For domestic trips, total expenditure decreased by 0.3%, while for trips abroad it increased by 14.2%.

The average daily expenditure was 62 euros, with 53 euros spent on domestic trips and 98 euros for trips abroad.

By expenditure items, the highest expenditure on domestic trips was on accommodation, with 29.6% of the total and an annual increase of 0.8%. For trips abroad, the highest expenditure was on transport, with 26.4% of the total and an increase of 17.1%

By main destination, the highest average daily expenses were recorded in trips to the Illes Balears (92 euros), Canarias (87), and Comunidad de Madrid (78). The lowest expenses were in Castilla y León (36), Castilla-La Mancha (39), and Región de Murcia (40).

By origin, the highest average daily expenses were made by residents of Cantabria (81 euros), Canarias (79), and Illes Balears (75). The lowest daily expenses were in Región de Murcia (48), Comunitat Valenciana (54), and Aragón and Comunidad Foral de Navarra (both 58 euros).

Monthly data

August recorded the highest number of trips this quarter (24.9 million) and the longest average duration (7.9 overnight stays).

Excursions

The population aged 15 and over made 51.3 million trips in the third quarter, an annual decrease of 19.1%. Of these, 98.3% were for personal reasons.

Methodological note

The objective of the Residents Travel Survey (ETR/FAMILITUR) is to provide information on the trips and excursions carried out by the population resident in Spain, both within the country and abroad, and their main characteristics (duration, expenditure, reason, accommodation, etc.).

In addition, it provides annual information on the percentage of the population travelling for personal reasons and investigates the reasons given by those who do not travel.

quarterly continuous survey.
Population scope:
population aged 15 and over living in family homes in Spain.
Geographical scope:
the entire national territory.
Reference period of the results:
month, quarter, year (depending on the variable).
Sample size:
the effective monthly sample is around 8,200 persons, who provide information on the trips completed in the two months prior to the interview. The results of a reference month are obtained from around 16,400 questionnaires.
Sample type:
stratified three-stage random sample from the Georeferenced Address Framework. The first-stage units are census sections, the second-stage units are dwellings (a person aged 15 or over has been selected within each dwelling).
Collection method:
telephone and face-to-face interviews and online questionnaire.
