Advance Estimator of the Residents Travel Survey

The main objective of the project is to provide an advance monthly estimate of the total number of tourist trips taken by residents of Spain, making this variable available in a more timely manner and with a shorter time lag relative to the publication of the ETR. The aim is to significantly reduce the time it takes for the information to become available, moving from several months for the publication of final results - with a delay that can be as long as five months for the first month of each quarter - to a period of thirty-five days following the reference month.

To this end, data collected from the 25-day subsample of the ETR is combined with auxiliary information derived from mobile phone data and various calendar variables, using different prediction models. The individual predictions are integrated using a stacking system, which optimizes the weight of each model to obtain more accurate and robust results.
