Description
Greenhouse gas emissions of Spain attributed to the final demand (consumption and investment) of economic activities by region/country and households
Calculation method

An environmentally extended Multiregional Input-Output (MRIO) model based on Eurostat's FIGARO inter-country input-output tables is used, in which:

$$ECGEI = D \cdot (I - A)^{-1} \cdot Y$$

where \(ECGEI\) is the greenhouse gas emission footprint (in CO2 equivalent) attributed to final demand, \(D\) is the GHG emission coefficient matrix (emissions per unit of output) for each economic activity, \((I-A)^{-1}\)  is the Leontief inverse matrix, \(Y\)  is the final demand vector (final consumption and investment), disaggregated by country/region.

Observations

Using multiregional input-output (MRIO) models incorporating environmental extensions. These models integrate information from two main datasets:
1) FIGARO inter-country supply and use tables, a satellite framework of national accounts that describes the production and consumption activities of an economy.
2) Air emissions accounts, which report greenhouse gas emissions by country, economic activity, and type of gas.
This approach allows for the calculation of emissions throughout the entire production chain of a product. Emissions by gas type are converted into carbon dioxide equivalent (CO¿e) by multiplying the mass of each gas by its global warming potential (GWP), following the AR5 (Fifth Assessment Report) values.
