Metadata Sub-indicator 2.5.2.1. Proportion of local livestock breeds considered at risk of extinction
Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Target 2.5. By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seed and plant banks at the national, regional and international levels, and ensure access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as internationally agreed.
Indicator 2.5.2. Proportion of local and transboundary breeds classified as being at risk of extinction
Sub-indicator 2.5.2.1. Proportion of local livestock breeds considered at risk of extinction
Proportion of local breeds at risk of extinction in relation to the total number of local breeds with valid information on their population size.
Based on the number of local breeds existing in our country (according to the FAO definition, a local breed is one that only one country has reported its existence) for which population information has been reported, the percentage of these breeds that are at risk of extinction is determined.
The calculation of breeds at risk of extinction is performed on the FAO DAD-IS website and according to the contents of the Guide for the In Vivo Conservation of Animal Genetic Resources (FAO, 2013).
The data are supplied to DAD-IS from the National Breed Information System, ARCA. In turn, ARCA collects, on an annual basis, population information from all authorized purebred breeders' associations in accordance with the EU Animal Breeding Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/1012, of June 8) and with Royal Decree 45/2019, of February 8.
